Starting your own bathroom hardware brand with a factory in China — how it actually works

Many of the bathroom hardware brands you see online do not have their own factories. They collaborate with Chinese manufacturers to produce the products and then affix the brand logo on the packaging. This practice is called "brand licensing" and is much cheaper than most people think. If you also want to give it a try, here is how the process actually works.

First, find the right factory

Most people tend to make this mistake here. Don't just contact the first factory you see on Alibaba. Look for those that have already produced the type of products you want - such as faucets, shower heads, towel racks, tees, etc., regardless of your product category. Factories specializing in producing the products you need will have far fewer quality defects, while those that produce various products may have many problems. Request samples as early as possible and pay the fee. If a factory refuses to send samples, it means they are not serious.

Decide what "own brand" means to you

There are different levels. The simplest approach is to directly purchase ready-made products from the factory catalogue and then add your logo - fast, cheap, and low risk. A more advanced approach is to customize the surface treatment, packaging, or some small design details of the product. The most thorough way is to start from scratch and develop completely new products based on your own design. Each stage is more costly and time-consuming, but it also gives you greater control and higher profit margins.

Choose the right packaging

It is obvious that packaging is a link that many new brand owners tend to overlook.

Even if the product itself is of high quality, a plain white box for a faucet will make people feel cheap. Invest in high-quality packaging that includes your brand logo, clear instructions for use, and a professional unpacking experience. If you provide design files, Chinese factories can usually undertake packaging design, but samples must be confirmed before production. Details matter, and they can greatly influence customers' perception of the brand.
