Many people believe that contactless faucets are cleaner. However, from the perspective of professional bathroom and hygiene research, their hygiene advantages are scene-specific and limited. They are not absolutely superior to traditional manual faucets.
The biggest core advantage of contactless faucets is to eliminate secondary contamination from hands. In crowded scenarios such as public restrooms, shopping malls, and schools, the handles of traditional faucets are frequent points of bacterial and virus transmission. Relevant hygiene research has confirmed that the non-contact design can significantly reduce secondary pollution after handwashing and effectively reduce the risk of contact-based pathogen transmission. This is also the core reason for the widespread adoption of contactless faucets in public places.
However, it has some overlooked hygiene shortcomings. The internal electromagnetic valves and mixing chambers of ordinary contactless faucets have stagnant water areas. When the water usage frequency is low and the water flow time is short, water accumulation in the pipes is prone to the growth of biofilms and bacteria. At the same time, the bubble generators and sensing probes at the water outlet are prone to accumulate water scale and soap residue. If not cleaned regularly, they will accumulate dirt instead.
In conclusion, contactless faucets are more hygienic in public high-frequency scenarios, but their advantages are limited in household scenarios. Regular water drainage, pipe cleaning, and cleaning of accessories are necessary to truly exert their hygiene advantages.
